Arts center hosts children's works

A show of youths' artworks will open Tuesday at the Arkansas Arts Center in Little Rock.

The 56th Young Arkansas Artists Exhibition will be on display through July 23 in the Alice Pratt Brown Atrium and the Sam Strauss Sr. Gallery at the center at 501 E. Ninth St.

The artworks were created by students from kindergarten through 12th grade.

Executive Director Todd Herman said the exhibit is a way to empower children and allow them to "express themselves in a positive way."

The exhibition consists of 104 works from 58 schools in 27 Arkansas cities. Members of the Arkansas Art Educators Association will select one winner of a Teacher's Choice Award from each grade level.

Each winning artist's school will receive a money award to support art programs.

On Saturday, there will be a family festival with activities from 10 a.m. to noon at the center, and an awards ceremony will follow.
