Police say they have arrested an Arkansas woman who left two young children in the care of a 5-year-old Friday night.

According to a report from the Jonesboro Police Department, an officer drove to a residence on Stadium Boulevard after some children called 9-1-1 while playing with a phone.

A child opened the door for the officer after 7 p.m. and said his older brother was watching him, the report stated.

When the older boy appeared at the top of the stairs, the officer learned he was 5 years old. The boy reportedly said his mother was at the laundromat and had left him with the other two children: the 4-year-old boy and a 3-year-old girl.

When the woman, later identified as 24-year-old Maurticius T. Gordon, returned to the residence 45 minutes later, she told officers that she had left the children “not even 10 minutes ago,” according to the report.

Gordon was arrested and charged with second-degree endangering the welfare of a minor. She remained at the Craighead County jail Monday afternoon in lieu of $545 bond.

Her next court appearance is scheduled for Wednesday.
