Take Off Pounds Sensibly is a nonprofit weight loss organization that has been around since 1945 and has helped thousands lose unwanted pounds. There are several chapters in the Northwest Arkansas area including Fayetteville, Elm Springs, Springdale, Lincoln, Siloam Springs, Gentry and Rogers.

First visit to any chapter is free, and participants may try more than one.

Writers

The Village Lake Writers and Poets will hold a book talk from 2 to 4 p.m. today with author J.C. Crumpton at the Artist Retreat Center, 13467 Lookout Drive in Bella Vista.

Crumpton is a local Western writer, science fiction and fantasy writer. Crumpton's first book is Silence in the Garden and his novella, Field of Strong Men, was nominated for the Western Writers of America 2017 Spur Award. Crumpton's writing includes short stories published in multiple journals. He is a prolific writer and has new novels being released in 2018 by Pro Se Publishing and 2019 by Oghma Creative Media Publishing. Crumpton is active in Ozark Writers League as well as having participated in the local writers group. He lives with his wife and son in Bentonville.

BC Dems

Benton County Dems will meet at 11 a.m. Monday at Golden Corral in Rogers with the program beginning at noon. Speakers will be Gladys Tiffany, director of the Omni Center for Peace, Justice and Equality, and co-presenter, Patrick Kinnemon, Citizens Climate Lobby. Their talk, "Theory and Practice of Conversing with Conservatives: How Science Can Help Us Bridge Divides and Keep Our Cool," presents the research of professors George Lakoff and Jonathan Haidt addressing how different value systems lead to miscommunication.

Garden Club

The Bentonville Garden Club will meet at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Arvest Conference Room. The program for the month will be presented by Earth Science Labs concerning clean water sources.

Car Club

Foothills of the Ozarks Car Club will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday at Colton's Steak House in Rogers. Members should arrive for dinner at 6 p.m.

The club was formed by a small group of car enthusiasts who were interested in promoting their love of antique automobiles. The club meets the first Thursday of each month at various restaurants. Everyone is invited.

Radio Club

The Bella Vista Amateur Radio Club will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday at Highlands Christian Church. The program will focus on emergency communications provided by hams in Puerto Rico in the wake of last year's devastating hurricanes.

For anyone interested in acquiring an amateur radio license, the club also administers FCC exams at 2 p.m. on the second Saturday of each month. Anyone interested in exploring the radio hobby or taking the FCC license exam is invited.

Altrusa of Rogers will meet at noon Thursday at The Egg and I restaurant to hear a presentation by Jolana Aibangbee, vice president of communication and development for the Northwest Arkansas Women's Shelter. She will share information about the services provided at the facility. Altrusa of Rogers will donate books for the book nook that the club previously established.

The Rogers Retired Teachers Association will meet from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday at Golden Corral, 2605 W. Pleasant Crossing Drive in Rogers. Retired educators or employees of any school system who live in the Rogers area are invited to attend. Gardeners

The Garden Club of Rogers will meet at 10 a.m. March 6 at the First Presbyterian Church, on the corner of New Hope Road and 26th Street in Rogers.

The program will be "Introduction to Basic Beekeeping" with speaker Patrick Edwards, president of Benton County Beekeepers Association. Edwards is also regional director of the statewide Arkansas Beekeepers Association. He and his wife, Kelly, are owners of Preppers Bee Supply in Garfield. Edwards manages approximately 85 hives of Italian and Russian honeybees.

Pollinators are an important part of the food chain. Honeybees account for three of every five bites of food that we eat. The program will discuss stages of honeybee life, bees that make up the hive and the pollination cycle and bees other than the honeybee.

There will be a horticulture report with a drawing for plant of the month and pass-along plants and magazines. Lunch will be catered by Susan's Catering; reservations are required.

The Hogville Amateur Radio Club has announced its March events.

The Northwest Arkansas Ostomy education and support group will meet at 2 p.m. March 18 at Hope Cancer Resources, 5835 W. Sunset Ave. in Springdale. The subject for discussion will be traveling with an ostomy. There will be a 1 p.m. educational meeting prior to the main meeting. The doors will open at 12:45 p.m. If for any reason the roads are unsafe due to inclement weather, the meeting will be canceled.

Children's Lives Include Moments of Bravery is a Children's Treehouse Foundation family support group that helps children ages 6 to 12 cope with and share feelings about a parent or loved one who has cancer. Cancer

Hope Cancer Resources offers a six-week art group, Art, Healing & Hope: Collaging Your Story, for patients with any type of cancer. Members will create a collage of their personal cancer journey. A light meal and all supplies needed for the project will be provided. The next group will meet from 5:30 to 7 p.m. every Thursday from April 5 until May 10 at Hope Cancer Resources5835 W. Sunset Ave. in Springdale. Members must RSVP to attend.
