FORT SMITH — Arkansas State Police is investigating the discovery of decomposed human remains found Friday morning along Interstate 540 near the Old Greenwood Road exit in south Fort Smith.
State police received the report from a litter pick-up crew working in the area shortly after 11 a.m.
Officers in the Arkansas State Police Criminal Investigation Division are handling the case and have sent the remains to the state Crime Laboratory in Little Rock to determine an identity and the manner and cause of death, according to a statement from the agency.
