Shots fired near Little Rock elementary school, police say; 1 building struck

A shooting was reported near a Little Rock elementary school Tuesday morning, police said, but no one was hurt.

Little Rock Police Department spokesman Lt. Michael Ford said the gunfire occurred shortly before 10 a.m. near Chicot Elementary at 11100 Chicot Road in Mabelvale.

Officer found that, although a school outbuilding had been struck by bullets, the shooting “didn’t have anything to do with the school,” Ford said. No children were in the building that was hit.

According to the spokesman, police are interviewing people of interest in the shooting. No arrests had been made Tuesday afternoon.

Ford said the school has reached out to students’ parents.

In response to questions about the shooting, Little Rock School District Communications Director Pamela Smith provided a statement sent to parents Tuesday morning.

The school was placed on lockdown, Principal Sherry Chambers wrote in the letter, adding that the building that was struck was hit six times.

No children were in the area where the building was hit, Smith added.
