2 dead, 3 injured in head-on collision on U.S. highway in Arkansas

Two people including a minor died and three others were injured in a two-car pileup Monday in northeast Arkansas, state police said.

The collision happened at 7:30 a.m. on U.S. 67 north of Walnut Ridge in Lawrence County, according to an Arkansas State Police preliminary crash report.

Troopers wrote that 61-year-old Robert Martin of Thayer, Mo., suffered fatal injuries when a southbound 2007 Chevy he was driving crossed the centerline and hit a northbound 2011 Chevy head-on. A male youth, who was a passenger in the northbound vehicle, also died in the crash.

The driver of the 2011 vehicle, identified as 25-year-old Courtney Waddell, and two other male minors were listed as hurt, authorities said.

The names and ages of the juvenile passengers have not been released.

Conditions were described as clear and dry at the time of the wreck.

At least 378 people have died in crashes on Arkansas roads so far this year, according to preliminary figures.
