Conway handles Catholic

CONWAY -- The Conway Wampus Cats were clicking on all cylinders from start to finish in their 7A-Central matchup with Little Rock Catholic in a 59-14 rout.

"Both sides of the ball kind of fed off each other. We were due for one of those," Conway Coach Keith Fimple said. "We're kind of late starters most of the time. It was fun to see everything come together like that."

The first half couldn't end fast enough for the visiting Rockets as Conway scored on every possession.

The Wampus Cats started the game with great field position as Slayde Smith returned the opening kickoff to midfield. Quarterback Jovoni Johnson connected on two passes to Nick Richmond, followed by a 1-yard touchdown run by Cary McClain to put Conway up 7-0.

Catholic was unable to move the ball on its first possession, ending it with a 39-yard quick kick that pinned the Cats deep at their own 12. It didn't matter during a drive that featured a 25-yard run by Johnson, and capped off with a 30-yard pass to Richmond to make it 14-0.

Despite hard running by quarterback Cooper Monroe and running back Samy Johnson, Catholic was unable to move the ball. Backup quarterback Jordan Edington came in to provide a spark for the Rockets, but Conway's defense held.

The Wampus Cats wasted no time with a 71-yard touchdown strike from Johnson to Richmond to make it 21-0.

The Rockets' offense answered with an Edington pass to Nate Cobb down to the Conway 29, setting up a touchdown pass to William Plafcan that put Catholic on the board at 21-7.

On Conway's next possession, runs by Luke Bailey combined with short passes to Will McKenna set up a fourth-down scoring run from Johnson to make it 28-7.

An interception by Roman Aaron put a stop to Catholic's next drive. Johnson then hit Bryce Bohanon on a scoring pass to make it 35-7. On Conway's next possession, a nice catch by McKenna set up a 23-yard field goal by Will Hogue to make it 38-7 at halftime.

Johnson scored on Catholic's first possession of the second half on a 70-yard run to make it 38-14. Conway racked up three more touchdowns to make the final 59-14.

Conway (8-1, 5-1 7A-Central) plays at Bryant next week. Catholic (4-5, 1-5) plays at Little Rock Central.
