Van Buren hasn't been able to host a meet since 2015 because of its track's condition, but that has all changed this year.
The school's track facility has a new surface and has been renovated, and the sport returns in a big way over the next few weeks. Van Buren brings back the Pointer Relays on Friday, then it will be the host for the 6A-West Conference meet on April 25.

"It feels good to be back," Van Buren coach Hays Lemley said. "We're glad to be able to host meets again and have athletes come to our facility. It's been quite a renovation because our track was in disrepair -- just old, not damaged. The previous surface had been installed in 2001 and wore out."
Lemley said the new track surface is very similar to the one Bentonville High installed in the Tiger Athletic Complex last year, and the facility has been restructured to look and feel more like a collegiate track facility. All of the field events can be held inside the facility, which leads to better viewing, and Lemley also noted the facility has added new restrooms and concession stands.
The test runs have already been made as the Van Buren Running Festival was held Feb. 28, and Van Buren took its turn last month to host the James Lemley Quad City Relays, an annual meet that rotates between Van Buren, Fort Smith Southside, Greenwood and Alma. Lemley said he is hoping the new video board will be finished and ready for Friday's meet, which will include some fellow 6A-West schools.
"I know Bentonville, Rogers and Rogers Heritage are coming to get a feel for the track before the conference meet," Lemley said. "There could be more teams coming, and I do hope they come. We're expecting 10-15 teams to come to this meet."
Low numbers, high results
Bentonville High girls coach Randy Ramaker said this year's team is one of the smallest groups he has had since he's been at the school.
The Lady Tigers may be small in numbers, but they have put up some big numbers in the past two weeks en route to winning the team titles at the Border Clash in Nixa, Mo., and at the Cyclone Relays in Russellville.
"The kids we have do decent things," Ramaker said. "As far as the Nixa meet, it turned out to be a duel between Rogers and a few Missouri teams. At Russellville, we were able to run against Conway, Cabot and Bryant, which are the three strongest teams in the 6A-Central. It was nice to see that.
"We didn't load up everything that we could because these kids want to either start working on some very fast times because some have already prequalified for state. It's nice to win those meets and always nice to win a meet. But like I told our kids, we're not there yet."
One of the athletes that caught Ramaker's eye at the Cyclone Relays was freshman Anabelle Bradley, who won the 3,200 meters with a state-best time of 11 minutes, 31.95 seconds. This gives Bentonville the state's best times in all three distance events as senior Lainey Quandt leads the 800 (2:15.69) and the 1,600 (4:59.95 at Russellville).
Ramaker also liked what he saw from the Lady Tigers' 4x100 relay team, who turned in a winning time of 50.33 seconds. He also praised senior Avery Hughes, who ran the 300 hurdles in 47.86 seconds for a third-place finish after teammate Lydia Pehlman ran a personal-best 47.19 at Border Clash. Those performances helped Bentonville compile 208 points at the Russellville meet, while Bryant was a distant second at 98 points, followed by Conway with 96.
"Anabelle had been sick and under the weather a little bit," Ramaker said. "She finally started practicing and training a little better. That was one where it was like, 'OK, I didn't think you were able to do that.'
"Avery Hughes just came out of basketball, and she's had two weeks practice, max. She's an athlete, but still, you have to do it a little bit. Our 4x100 team had two bad exchanges, and that's the first time they ran together. We maybe practiced it a couple of times in practice."

Fayetteville senior Camren Fischer became the first Arkansas high school runner to break the 9-minute mark in the boys 3,200 meters Saturday as he competed in the Arcadia Invitational.
Fischer, a Princeton signee, turned in a time of 8 minutes, 55.04 seconds and finished 10th out of 33 runners, and beat his season-best of 9:13.22 during the Texas Distance Festival last month. Nico Young of Newbury Park, Calif., won the race in 8:40.00 as 14 runners finished before the 9:00 mark.
David Carroll of Rogers owns the Class 6A state record with his hand-held time of 9:24.8 (9:25.04 FAT equivalent) that he ran in 1997. Brian Baker of Batesville owns the overall state record with a hand-held time of 9:09.8 (9:10.04 FAT equivalent) he ran in 1989.
Meanwhile, Bentonville senior Lainey Quandt became the fourth Arkansas girl to finish the 1,600 in less than 5 minutes when she turned in a time of 4:59.95 during the Cyclone Relays in Russellville.
Quandt, who has signed with Arkansas, broke her previous best of 5:01.29 that she ran March 8 during the Springdale Invitational. Julie Jiskra of Conway currently owns the 6A and 7A state records in the girls 1,600 with her hand-held time of 5:01.8 (5:02.04 FAT equivalent) she ran in 1986.
