The Walmart Foundation is giving $4.8 million in grants to two organizations aiming to improve the livelihoods of farmers in India. The grants to Digital Green and TechnoServe will support programs that help farmers access agricultural technology and formal markets, as well as training in sustainable farming methods.
The foundation, which is Walmart Inc.'s charitable arm, said in a news release Tuesday that the grants are part of a commitment to contribute $25 million to aid Indian farmers over five years. Since September 2018, it has awarded more than $10 million toward its goal.
Tuesday's announcement "builds upon the Walmart Foundation's efforts to increase economic opportunity for smallholder farmers and their families while promoting sustainable farming practices and the empowerment and inclusion of women," said Kathleen McLaughlin, foundation president and Walmart's chief sustainability officer.
The grants were announced at a conference in New Delhi on strengthening agricultural systems and increasing small-farmer income. It was organized by Walmart.org and the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry.
