• It is important to pick cotton as rapidly as possible, to prevent its becoming weather stained, according to H. M. Cottrell, agriculturalist of the Arkansas Profitable Farming Bureau of the Little Rock Board of Commerce. ... The fiber of this lot of stained cotton was uninjured. It was long, strong, smooth and soft, but the spinners' representatives said that it would take dyes unevenly, and make a blotched cloth. They would rather pay a high price for pure, white cotton.

CROSSETT -- Ashley County Judge W. T. Higginbotham has taken under advisement the proposed annexation of North Crossett and South Crossett to Crossett. He said after a hearing last week that he would rule on the annexation within 10 days. Crossett residents voted July 15 to annex the areas. At the hearing, Mayor Vaskell Carter of Crossett explained that police and fire protection and garbage services would be available for residents of the annexed areas.

• City of Maumelle officials seeking a curb cut along Maumelle Boulevard hit a roadblock with the state Highway Commission. Maumelle officials support cutting across the median along the east side of Maumelle Boulevard between Commerce and Edgewood drives so traffic can get into the adjacent property. They believe the cut would help promote retail development. ... The Highway Commission must approve any changes in the city's master street plan because Maumelle Boulevard is also a state highway, Arkansas 100. The commission took no action but suggested the city hold a public hearing on the curb cut. Commission Chairman Bill Clark of Little Rock ... said he "had a lot of calls today" opposing the curb cut.

• Push mowing the grass at the Oak Forest Community Garden is the bane of Debbie Sue Dillard Preston's existence, so the garden director asked Little Rock for money for a new riding mower, a stipend for her and supplies to start a farmer's market in the low-income neighborhood near the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. ... The requests included a tax-assistance program, signs for neighborhood associations, meals for seniors and street improvements in the College Station neighborhood.
