Panel approves cut to some gun fees

The House Judiciary Committee on Thursday approved a bill that would cut in half the fee for a concealed handgun carry license.

Senate Bill 17 by Sen. Trent Garner, R-El Dorado, would reduce the licensing fee from $100 to $50 and from $50 to $25 for applicants 65 years old or older.

The cost to renew the license would be cut from $35 to $25 under SB17.

SB17 passed the Senate on Wednesday by a vote of 25-8.

The cut would reduce revenue to the Arkansas State Police by about $1.4 million a year, according to agency officials.

The House has passed identical legislation, House Bill 1036, by Rep. Jim Dotson, R-Bentonville.
