Little Rock woman jailed in shooting has murder conviction on record

A Little Rock woman who police say shot and killed a man on his doorstep in November was convicted 18 years ago for shooting and killing her father on her front porch, court records show.

Little Rock police arrested Cynthia Denise Kelley, 43, on Tuesday in the shooting death of Corey Jackson in November, department spokesman Eric Barnes said.

Just after 3 a.m. Nov. 16, a 911 caller told police that a man had been shot and was pleading for help at 3109 W. 17th St., according to reports. When officers arrived, they found Jackson dead in the doorway of the residence.

In 2000, Kelley negotiated a guilty plea for second-degree murder in the shooting death of her father, Edward Garrison, who died in May 1999, according to previous reports.

Kelley told the court in 2000 that she regretted shooting her father and that she hadn't meant to kill him. He was drunk that day, she told the court, and after she asked him to leave multiple times, he assaulted her, prompting her to grab her gun to "scare" him, according to reports from the trial.

The prosecutor argued, however, that the muzzle of the gun was touching Garrison's neck when his daughter shot him, and that Kelley had told officers that she thought about stabbing her father before she reached for the gun, previous reports said.

Kelley was sentenced to 15 years in prison. She was arrested again in 2007 on charges of obstructing government operations, according to court documents. She was arrested on a charge of prostitution in 2012 and on domestic battery charges in 2014.

As of Tuesday night, jail records show she was in the Pulaski County jail without bond facing a charge of first-degree murder.
