• Alex Barna, a high school senior in Wanaque, N.J., called going to prom in a limo or on a party bus "the best part of the night" as she and other students protested a decision by school administrators to require all attendees to ride on school-provided and chaperoned coach buses to and from the venue.

• Sean Maryott, owner of a general store in Homer, Alaska, is sending Stormy, a cat that has been a fixture in his store for more than six years, to go live with a relative after state inspectors determined that the cat's presence violates food safety standards.

• Stacey Crail, 47, a bank teller in Kansas City, Mo., who confessed to helping steal nearly $400,000 over a five-year period by replacing packages of $100 bills with stacks of $1 bills and falsifying records, was sentenced to a year in prison, federal prosecutors said.

• Robert Lillard, 51, a pilot whose small plane went down in the Atlantic Ocean about 15 miles east of Juno Beach, Fla., was rescued after he switched on an electronic tracking device that alerted rescuers to his position as he floated on a raft.

• Jacob Bushkin, 29, of Scottsdale, Ariz., faces animal cruelty and other charges after being accused of stabbing his 4-year-old golden retriever service dog more than 100 times and slashing its throat before dumping the dog's body in a garbage can, police said.

• Laquisha Jones, 30, of Los Angeles, convicted of elder abuse for hitting a 92-year-old man in the face with a brick in an unprovoked attacked that was captured on video that was shared on social media, was sentenced to 15 years in prison, prosecutors said.

• Leka Gjokaj, 55, an Albanian native who overstayed his visa, was charged with illegally practicing dentistry after investigators found a dentist chair, an X-ray machine, molds for teeth and other items in the basement of his home in Clinton Township, Mich.

• Roger Johnson, 45, of Woodville, Ala., accused of trying to blow up his mother using a propane tank, was arrested after a small explosion occurred as an officer and the mother checked out a booby-trapped storage shed, prosecutors said.

• Catina Curley, who served 11 years in prison before her murder conviction for shooting her abusive husband to death in 2005 was overturned last year, was acquitted in a second trial when a judge ruled the shooting justified.
