VARNER -- Lincoln County sheriff's deputies arrested a state Department of Correction employee Thursday after he allegedly attempted to bring about four ounces of marijuana into the Cummins prison. Authorities held prison guard John Qualls, 31, on suspicion of possession of a controlled substance and attempted introduction of a prohibited item into prison. Qualls, who has worked with the department since 1991, allegedly left the prison to go to his car following a 6 a.m. roll call, prison spokesman Alan Ables said. Another employee watched him leave and called shift commander Capt. Herman King, who ordered Qualls searched as he re-entered the building. Qualls resisted the search and bolted through a window, Ables said. Three other guards caught Qualls on the grounds and found the marijuana stuffed into the fingers of one of his work gloves.

• A Sherwood man who shot and killed an intruder on his property in 2007, and whose manslaughter trial in January ended with a deadlocked jury, is now on trial on a related federal charge of being a felon in possession of firearms. In the trial that began Monday, U.S. District Judge James Moody said he will not allow jurors to hear about Larry Leroy Staley's shooting of 18-year-old Brandon Cross early Oct. 23, 2007, because he doesn't want to confuse or prejudice the jury. But Moody will allow evidence that Staley, a 67-year-old former Marine, fired a Browning .22-caliber pistol because that is relevant to whether he actually possessed the gun. Moody also is allowing defense attorney John Wesley Hall Jr. to try to show that Staley was justified in possessing the handgun -- after his son removed it from a locked case and gave it to him -- because he saw someone lurking in the dark outside his house and then running toward him and was acting to protect himself and his family.
