The Beaver Watershed Alliance is looking for volunteers to help local landowners in the Beaver Lake Watershed plant trees and shrubs along riparian and forested lands.
Tree planting events are planned from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Thursday in St. Paul and from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday along the west fork of the White River. All ages are welcome. RSVP at beaverwatershedalliance.org for directions.
The alliance has distributed 16,000 native plants to landowners through its free tree and shrub program, according to a news release from the group.
Riparian and forested lands are crucial to protecting waterways because they filter water runoff and slow down erosion. Sediment from erosion is the biggest pollutant to the region's drinking water resource, Beaver Lake.
Native plants also provide habitat for local wildlife and pollinators and many other ecosystem services.
