Zoo's play area set to open today

The Little Rock Zoo will open its new sensory play garden today.

A grand opening event featuring zoo officials and animals is set for 10:30 a.m. at the playground.

The area is an update to the Kiwanis Playground between the Arkansas Heritage Farm and the flamingo habitat.

The project was funded with a $144,000 Blue & You Foundation for a Healthier Arkansas grant.

The sensory garden encourages visitors to touch, taste, smell, listen, admire and play in a variety of ways. In addition to a traditional playground, it features fragrant plants, opportunities for tactile play, musical instruments and other structures meant to encourage creative play.

It's accessible to children as well as adults with disabilities.
