North Little Rock police are investigating after two officers shot a person Tuesday morning, officials said.

Sgt. Amy Cooper, a spokeswoman for the North Little Rock Police Department, said officers were called before 8 a.m. to Rimrock Place and Locust Street, which is north of JFK Avenue and I Avenue.

Cooper said officers responded to an initial report of a gunman walking up and down the street and pointing a handgun at people and making threats. When the person entered a nearby apartment at 112 Rimrock Place, officers surrounded the building and negotiated with him for an unknown period of time.

“During that negotiation process, the subject exited the front door of the location and pointed a handgun at officers,” Cooper said. “At that time two officers shot the subject.”

The gunman was transported to UAMS Medical Center for treatment of his injuries, according to a news release by the department. His condition wasn't immediately known.

Cooper said the investigation was still ongoing.

The two officers, whose names weren't released, were placed on administrative leave.
