• Arkansas state troopers issued nearly 1,600 speeding tickets and arrested 339 motorists during the Labor Day weekend. Before the three-day weekend began, Col. John R. Bailey said troopers would strictly enforce speeding laws because speed is the major contributing factor in traffic fatalities. "There were four fatalities this holiday, compared to five last year," said Capt. John Chappelle, assistant Highway Patrol commander. "We like to think that our efforts are saving lives out there." One of the dead was a pedestrian, and the other three were motorists who were not wearing seat belts when they had accidents, troopers said. There were 168 traffic accidents over the holiday weekend. In all, 1,585 speeding tickets were issued. Troopers arrested 220 for criminal violations and 119 for driving while intoxicated.

BROOKLAND -- Depending on their location, signs on U.S. 49 leading into Brookland show the divide over a proposed 2 percent sales tax and annexation. Banners on the outskirts of the town of 1,332 -- displayed along a three-mile corridor of land along the highway that the city hopes to take in -- urge voters to oppose the move. Signs hung near the downtown and at the town's golf course promote the tax, saying revenue will help repair problems with Brookland's streets, drainage system, sidewalks and parks. Voters will decide the issue in a special election Tuesday.
