Latin American league honors scholars

Forty-three college-bound students were honored Sept. 13 at an annual Scholarship Dinner at the Clinton Presidential Center hosted by the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) Council 750.

The scholarship winners and their families enjoyed a dinner, music by the Little Rock Central High School Jazz Band and a keynote address by Hendrix College President Bill Tsutsui.

Andre Guerrero, president of Council 750, told guests it was a night to "celebrate the success of our college-bound students reaching this milestone event."

Before the presentation of scholarship and student awards, several special awards were presented to members of the community. The president's award was given to the Clinton Foundation and La Esperanza Award was given to Robert Tellez. Arkansas United received the Heroes de la Comunidad Award, El Sueno Americano Award was given to Rocio Richard and Arkansas Tech University received the University Service Award.

Over the last 20 years, according to a news release, LULAC Council 750 has awarded about $900,000 in college scholarships to almost 500 students.
