State reports 478 new covid-19 cases, 12 additional deaths

The Arkansas Department of Health logged 478 new covid-19 cases and 12 additional deaths on Sunday, Gov. Asa Hutchinson announced on Sunday afternoon.

Of the new cases, 43 were reportedly associated with correctional facilities.

The new case total represented a decline from Saturday's 795 new cases and Friday's 838.

Cumulative covid-19 infections in the state reached 60,856 with the additional cases reported on Sunday. The state's death toll since the start of the novel coronavirus pandemic is 784, according to the Health Department.

"These are better numbers than yesterday and should encourage everyone," Hutchinson wrote on Twitter in a post announcing the new cases. "These are difficult times but so proud of our teachers, students, and athletes for a good start to the school year."

The number of hospitalized patients on Sunday rose to 391, an increase of seven. The number of patients on a ventilator fell by six to 84.

A total of 54,408 people in Arkansas have recovered from the virus as of Sunday, the Health Department reported.

Results from 6,051 tests were reported to the Health Department on Saturday.
