A man and a woman in Lonoke County face felony charges after their arrest late Friday following the death of a 3-year-old girl.

Nessa Paige Rodgers, 32, and John Presley Lampston, 35, were arrested Friday night after the authorities responded to a report of an unresponsive child who later was pronounced dead at the hospital, according to the Lonoke County sheriff's office.

Rodgers faces a capital murder charge and a first-degree felony charge of endangering the welfare of a minor, according to the inmate roster of the county jail.

Lampston faces a first-degree charge of endangering the welfare of a minor, and charges of permitting the abuse of a child and hindering apprehension or prosecution, according to the inmate roster.

Capt. David Bufford said Sunday that Rodgers and Lampston are believed to be the child's guardians.

Two deputies and medical personnel responded to the report Friday, and a deputy noted inconsistencies between the child's injuries and statements from Rodgers and Lampston, who initially said the child had fallen off a porch, Bufford said.

"Things just weren't adding up with what he was seeing as far as the injuries," Bufford said of the deputy.

Detectives were brought in to investigate, which led to the arrests later that night, Bufford said.

Rodgers and Lampston were booked into jail shortly after 3:15 a.m. Saturday, and they remained there Sunday afternoon without bail.
