• The Harry Van Ness Oil Syndicate of Wichita, Kan., has secured options on 15,000 acres in Sevier and Howard counties and will drill five wells within the next 60 or 90 days in that section, according to A.E. Clark, who is associated with the syndicate. The first well will be located near Center Point, Howard county, and the other four will be within a radius of 80 miles of the first one.

• The walls and hot air at Barton Coliseum vibrated Saturday night with the pulsating sounds of Steppenwolf, the five-man hard-rock group, before an audience of 5,000, most of them teen-agers. "They're groovy, I just freak out with their music," a 15-year-old barefoot girl squealed as she sat on the concrete floor crammed nearly wall-to-wall with the young people. "I never thought Arkansas would have something that the kids would like," she said.

BENTONVILLE -- Two surplus military helicopters have landed at the Benton County sheriff's office. But authorities don't know when they will take off. The Department of Defense awarded two surplus OH-58 helicopters to the sheriff's office for use in drug eradication. County officials appear to be concerned about operating costs and the intended use for the helicopters. Benton County Sheriff Andy Lee confirmed Quorum Court members and County Judge Bruce Rutherford are concerned about the procurement of the aircraft. "But I can't seem to find out what their questions are," Lee said. Local news media reported last week that Rutherford had not accepted the helicopters as county property.

• Jan Jenkins had difficulty describing to friends and family how to get to Yarborough Landing because it wasn't on a map. At the time, you couldn't even "Google" it. Others in the unincorporated community in Little River County had a hard time obtaining grants to build a community center because, again, it wasn't on the map. Identification as a community in which population and income can be measured helps in filling out grant applications, Jenkins said. So last June she called the Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department. And what do you know? The unincorporated community situated on Millwood Lake in Little River County now is on the map, one of more than 50 mostly minor changes found in the newest edition of the Arkansas State Highway map, which became available this month.
