Arts & Science Center sets month’s events, exhibits

In November, the Arts & Science Center for Southeast Arkansas 701 S. Main St., will feature an exhibit of political cartoons from the 1930s and 40s, a live-streamed concert by Wine & Roses, and two days of entertainment showcasing local performers in Heart for the Arts, a virtual fund-raising telethon.

The exhibits and events for the month are as follows:

“BALLOTS & LAUGHS: POLITICAL CARTOONS OF RAY WALTERS” — NOV. 5-JAN. 23, 2021

The community is invited to view a light-hearted perspective of the 1930s and ’40s political and social climate with the Arts & Science Center’s exhibition, “Ballots & Laughs: Political Cartoons of Ray Walters.”

The exhibition is on view Thursday, Nov. 5, through Saturday, Jan. 23, 2021. Walters’ renderings are part of ASC’s permanent collection. This exhibition will include a virtual public programming event, according to a news release.

The project is made possible in part by a mini-grant from the Arkansas Humanities Council and the National Endowment for the Humanities.

VIRTUAL LIVE@5 CONCERT WITH WINE & ROSES — NOV. 6

Wine & Roses will perform a livestreamed concert from 5-6 p.m., Friday, Nov. 6, on ASC’s Facebook page, facebook.com/asc701. The group formed in 2002 when the Peabody Hotel reopened and was in search of a musical lounge act. They served as a house band for the hotel with a focus on nostalgia music. The band tours regularly around Arkansas.

This performance is part of ASC’s monthly Live@5 concert series. A virtual donation box will be available for those wishing to contribute. Donations will go toward supporting ASC’s programming.

ASC hosts musicians who play jazz, blues, and rock & roll on the first Friday of every month. This event is sponsored by M.K. Distributors.

HEART FOR THE ARTS: ASC TELETHON — NOV. 13-14

The Arts & Science Center is gearing up for a virtual fund-raising event featuring area performers. Heart for the Arts: ASC Telethon 2020 will livestream from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 13, and Saturday, Nov. 14, on ASC’s website and social media.

The goal is to raise funds in support of ASC’s programming as theaters and museums nationwide have experienced a decrease in revenue due to the coronavirus pandemic, according to the release.

Hosted by veteran emcee Matt Soto, Heart for the Arts will feature performances by guests including saxophonist Damen Tolbert, dancers from Mrs. Tana’s Dance Factory, The Boys (featuring Matt Soto, Ben Trevino and Taylor Oates), a musical performance by White Hall Elementary School teachers, University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff’s Richard Bailey, ASC performing arts volunteers and others to be announced.

This event will also include video tours of ASC’s new The ARTSpace on Main facility, testimonials from community members, and the launch of a virtual ARTWORKS! art auction. Supporters will be able to call into a live phone bank to make donations. There will also be a link on all social media platforms to make donations online. The event is a collaboration with the UAPB Multimedia Communication Department.

ARTWORKS! VIRTUAL ART AUCTION — NOV. 13-22

Art lovers can add to their collections while supporting ASC and artists during the Arts & Science Center’s biennial art auction, according to a news release.

ARTWORKS!! Virtual Art Auction will kick off during the “Heart for the Arts” telethon. The auction will open at 12:05 a.m. Friday, Nov. 13, and close at 11:55 Sunday, Nov. 22. This year’s auction and bidding process is completely online and open to all.

Bidders can choose pieces by artists such as Nancy Abernathy, Cathy Burns, Kristin DeGeorge, Karen DeJarnette, Scinthya Edwards, Eric Freeman and Sherry Williamson.

The artwork will be viewable online and on display at ASC’s new community art and event facility, The ARTSpace on Main (623 S. Main St. in Pine Bluff, next door to ASC’s main building). For more information, visit asc701.org/heart-for-the-arts-telethon.

SECOND SATURDAY FAMILY FUNDAY: DIY BOTTLE CAR — NOV. 14

Visitors can explore the power of energy by building bottle cars during ASC’s next free Second Saturday Family FunDay, 1-3 p.m. Nov. 14. Participants can see how to turn potential energy into kinetic energy through engineering balloon-powered bottle and cup cars.

OCTOBER FUN DAY WINNER

ASC congratulates Evan Myers, the winner of its Engineering a Bone Bridge Contest for October Second Saturday Family Fun Day.

Bone Bridges were designed using Q-tips, clothespins, colored pipe cleaners, and hot glue. An image of participants alongside their construction was uploaded for community members to vote on, according to the release.

Meyers’ design scored him two tickets to ASC’s production of “Clue,” shown online in late October and available through asc701.org/clue/. The production was sponsored by Simmons Bank, Explore Pine Bluff, and UA-Little Rock Public Radio FM 89.1 KUAR/90.5 KLRE.
