PINE BLUFF -- Miss Areth Buchanan, aged 18, is in critical condition tonight at her home, 816 Cherry street, as a result of taking two teaspoons of Paris green. She swallowed the poison shortly after 8 o'clock, the time set for her marriage to Arthur Branch, aged 24, an employe of the B. and B. Electric Company here. The couple had been engaged for some time, according to a relative, and plans had been made for the wedding tonight. Several friends and relatives of the bride-to-be had gathered at her mother's home, where the ceremony was to have taken place. The clock struck eight, but the prospective groom had not shown up. After waiting several minutes Miss Buchanan is said to have disappeared.

• State Sen. Mike Beebe, D-Searcy, announced Tuesday that he will not be a candidate for the seat being given up next year by U.S. Sen. David Pryor, D-Ark. Beebe, who has served in the state Senate since 1983, often was mentioned as a potential Democratic contender for Pryor's seat. Beebe is in the middle of a four-year term and could have made the race without losing his seat. Beebe, 48, said there are two "distinct considerations" for those considering a statewide race.

• Competition from another hotel in downtown North Little Rock doesn't bother the owners of the Wyndham Riverfront-Little Rock, a company spokesman said last week -- just how City Hall appears to them to be lending taxpayer assistance to the competition. The proposed hotel, which would be built by a John Gaudin-led partnership, hinges on the North Little Rock City Council approving a property exchange -- four vacant city-owned lots for the Gaudin-owned former Rye Furniture Building at 201 Maple St. The City Council will take up the land-swap proposal for a second time at 7 p.m. today.
