Hospital flu cases just five for week

LITTLE ROCK -- There were five hospital admissions of people with a positive flu test during the week that ended March 20, according to a report from the Arkansas Department of Health.

Overall, there have been 193 hospitalizations for flu in the state since late September. Flu cases reported to the health agency were at 1,938, though that is likely just a small portion of total cases since most aren't documented.

No new flu deaths were reported last week. The season's toll in Arkansas remains at 18 -- an unusually low number, public health experts have said.

Of the people who died from flu in recent months, 13 were 65 or older, data shows.

During the 2019-2020 flu season, 118 Arkansans died from influenza. Seventy-two of those were 65 or older.

The report showed "influenza-like illness" activity as "minimal" in the state, its lowest possible level. That's the same as at least the previous seven weekly reports.

No nursing homes in Arkansas reported flu outbreaks during this season.
