LITTLE ROCK NOTEBOOK: Mayor commits to pared energy use | Group promotes '501 Day' blowout

Mayor commits to pared energy use

Little Rock is set to commit to an energy reduction plan later this year, Little Rock Mayor Frank Scott Jr. announced during his virtual State of the City broadcast Thursday.

The initiative was one of many plans Scott discussed during the address.

Scott said the city will obtain a fleet of electric vehicles and accompanying infrastructure by 2030.

"The historic flooding of 2019, unprecedented snowstorms just a month ago, and other natural disasters demonstrate the importance of being a good steward of the environment," Scott said.

Scientists have said nations around the globe need to dramatically reduce carbon emissions over the coming years to avoid the worst effects of climate change.

Group promotes '501 Day' blowout

The Downtown Little Rock Partnership is encouraging residents to take part in "501 Day," a new celebration of Central Arkansas communities named for the local area code and scheduled for May 1.

In a list of suggested activities, the organization has recommended that communities offer happy hour specials beginning at 5:01 p.m., or charge $5.01 admission to attractions such as museums or zoos. Charitable donations of $5.01 or $50.10 are also encouraged.
