Wanda Lee Harper-Schubert

Wanda Lee Harper-Schubert, long time resident of Hot Springs, Ark., died on Dec. 21, 2010, after a brief illness. She was born in 1924 in England, Ark., and her parents were Lee and Grace Benafield. She was married to Fred C. Harper in 1943 until his death in 1996. After his military service in WWII, they moved to Hot Springs and owned the El Rancho Motel for several years. Wanda was an active member of Oaklawn United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday school for many years. She was an avid duplicate bridge player, attaining life master status and served as a director at the Hot Springs Bridge Studio. In addition to her parents, Wanda was predeceased in death by her brother, Dr. Robert Benafield and husband, Fred Harper. She is survived by her loving husband, Steve Schubert and her children, Dr. David L. Harper and his wife Julia of Tulsa, Okla., Anne Elwood and her husband Brian of Little Rock, Ark.; six grandchildren and four great grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother, J.W. (Buddy) Benafield and his wife Dena of Little Rock, Ark., and her sister-in-law Helen Benafield of Conway, Ark. Memorial service will be held at the Gross Funeral Home on Monday at 10 a.m. with Reverend Fred Hunter and Msgr. Gus Hebert officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Oaklawn United Methodist Church, 216 Higdon Ferry Road, Hot Springs, Ark. 71913, Arkansas Hospice, 5600 West 12th St, Little Rock, Ark. 72204 or the charity of your choice.
