Mrs. La Verne Y. Mills, a resident of Topeka, Kansas for 35 years completed her journey through this life on Wednesday, June 30th, 2010 after a long battle with cancer. La Verne was born near Otto, Arkansas on August 4th, 1934. She is survived by her husband of 58 years, John A. Mills of Topeka and son John A. Miller, Jr. of Garden City, Kansas. The daughter of John V. and Lorean Wooley York (both deceased) La Verne also had a sister who died soon after birth. Additional survivors include two uncles and three aunts and many cousins, nieces and nephews. An employee of Olin Chemical Corp (Agri Division) at Little Rock, Arkansas for 22 years, she made many friends while working in the Human Relations Department, handling health insurance claims. As a young girl La Verne became a Christian and soon her talent for singing was brought to light. She sang on the Childrens Hour broadcast from the 1st Church of the Nazarene until at sixteen her beautiful voice was utilized in the adult choir for the next twenty-five (25) years. Re-locating to Topeka in 1975 she sang in the adult choir at Fairlawn Nazarene for several years. A graduate of Little Rock Senior High School in 1952 she was a member of several singing groups. La Verne was loved by everyone who came to know her. Her sweet smile and beautiful countenance will be missed and make heaven more desirable. A graveside service will be held for Mrs. Mills at Pinecrest Memorial Park at 1:30 p.m., Saturday, July 3rd, 2010 with Rev. Jim Daniel conducting the services. Funeral arrangements will be handled by Griffin Leggett Healey and Roth at 5800 West 12th Street Little Rock, Ark. 72204. A family visitation will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, July 3rd at the funeral home. Memorials may be sent to the Little Rock Salvation Army or First Church of the Nazarene in Little Rock.
