William "Bill" P. Scarlett Jr.

William "Bill" P. Scarlett Jr., 82, of Knoxville, Tenn., passed away March 28, 2011. Born: Russellville, AR to Dr. William P. Scarlett and Vivian Bullock Scarlett. His only sibling was Bobbye Scarlett (deceased). Bill's love of music began at the age of 10 after hearing Benny Goodman's Band. That inspiration led to his career as a performer and teacher. After receiving his masters from LSU, he began teaching at UT. He established the student and faculty band, The Jazz Giants, and played with the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra for over 20 years. In 1997, he was named LSU Alumnus of the Year and in 2008 was inducted into the Arkansas Jazz Hall of Fame. Bill leaves his wife Rebecca, daughters, Monica Scarlett and Holly Scarlett (Charles Jones), grandchildren, Ryan Jones and Morgan and Pierce Scarlett-Jones. Memorial service: Sunday, April 10, 2011, 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at The Foundry in Knoxville.
