Mr. J.E. "JACK" YOUNG, 79, of North Little Rock, passed away on April 6 after a courageous battle with lung cancer. He was born in Blue Mountain, Ark. on July 3, 1931 to the late Clayton Powell and Effie Finley Young. Jack was raised in Watson, Ark. and graduated from Watson High School. After graduation, he began farming in Logan County. He married Jacqueline Odell on June 1, 1950. He was drafted by the Army to serve in the Korean War in 1952, where he worked with the Corp of Engineers and obtained the rank of Sergeant prior to his discharge from the Army. After serving with the Army, our parents moved to Little Rock where he worked for Cook Paint and Yoder Manufacturing doing commercial and building painting. He also worked for many years as a contractor and home restorer. Jack restored over thirty historic homes throughout Little Rock and North Little Rock. His restoration work included The Ada Thompson Memorial Home, The Lightfoot Cabin, The Cornish House, The Baker House and Marshall Square. Upon retirement, he owned and managed Highcliff Apartments, Edgemont Townhouses and Marshall Square. He was preceded in death by his parents, six siblings and his wife of 47 years, Jackie Young in 1999. Survivors include his daughters Kelly Binz and her husband Jim, Holly Pettit and her husband Allen Pettit of Little Rock and Jack Stephen Young of North Little Rock; his beloved grandchildren Jay Binz, Marshall and Natalie Pettit; his twin brother A.E. Young and his wife Mildred of West Plains, Mo.; his sister in law Elva Jean Carter of Malvern; a brother in law Lester Odell and wife Barbara of Mountain Pine as well as many nieces and nephews. Jack loved spending time with his children and grandchildren. He enjoyed fishing, the outdoors and watching Wheel of Fortune and John Wayne movies. He was a gentleman with a big heart for everyone he knew. He made many friends over the years. In his later years, he enjoyed spending time with his family, neighbors and tenants. Our family would like to express our sincerest thankfulness to Dr. Paul Zelnick and staff for their many years of care and friendship, Visiting Nurses Association and the staff of Arkansas Hospice for all their compassionate care for him and our family during his illness. Our comfort is knowing that our father is without pain or discomfort and that he is finally reunited with our mother. Memorial Services will be held at the Arkansas State Veteran's Cemetery in North Little Rock on Tuesday at 10 a.m. with Reverend Scott Walters of the Christ Episcopal Church presiding. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the 20th Century Club Lodge, P.O. Box 21282, Little Rock, Ark. 72221 that provides no cost housing for cancer patients while receiving cancer treatment or to a charity of their choice. www.griffinleggetthealeyroth.com.
