Joe Allen Barnwell, 77, of Cabot, born on Oct. 28, 1933 in Vincennes, Ind., passed away Aug. 17, 2011. He was the only child of the late Dr. Jack and Geneva Bailey Barnwell of Cabot. The Barnwell family were original settlers and founding fathers of Cabot dating back multiple generations to Mr. Jackson T. and Neva Thompson Barnwell. Over the years, the Barnwells were involved in all aspects of Cabot's infrastructure from civic, religious, and economic developments. Joe attended and graduated Jacksonville High School in 1951 and participated in many sports. He later attended the University of Arkansas where he developed life-long friendships and was proud to be a three year champion of the competitive ping-pong team. His friends were eager to have Joe as a companion due to his spirit to have fun and entertain. Joe's career was centered around all aspects of real estate. He was an accomplished appraiser and was gifted in his artistic ability to draw maps and land developments. Everyone was amazed by his penmanship. Abstract companies had his work in high demand. He was well liked by his professional community. Later in life, Joe spent his time living and caring for his father, Dr. Jack Barnwell. He was a devoted and loving son, always available for his family. He was equally proud of his three children, two sons and a daughter who gave him great joy in being able to watch them grow up to be successful contributors to their communities. He had a special way with people to make them smile even on a first meeting. His character and spirit were so unique, everyone loved to have Joe be part of their lives. The family sends special thanks to Sherry Dunn Rose, a relative who helped Joe in so many ways in the last few years while in Cabot. Joe never missed an opportunity to spend time with his three granddaughters. He will be missed dearly and remembered forever by those who knew him. It is a blessing that he is rejoicing in heaven with his parents and other family and friends. He is survived by his three children, Joe Allen Barnwell Jr. and his wife Sara Barnwell, Bartly Williams Barnwell and his wife Anne Coleman Barnwell, and Blake Elizabeth Barnwell; three grandchildren, Bronwyn Allyn Barnwell and Merritt Margaret Barnwell daughters of Joe Allen Jr., and Alexandra Frances Barnwell daughter of Bartly; also his dog, Sugar and his cat, Kitty. We are proud to know that God has welcomed Joe into his kingdom. A reception in his honor will be held at the home of Bartly and Anne Barnwell from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 25 in Little Rock. Joe will be cremated, and a graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 26 with Reverend Beth Waldrup officiating, under the pavilion at the Mt. Carmel Cemetery in Cabot.
