James Logan Morgan Jr.

Rev. James Logan Morgan Jr., 70, died in his home in Newport on Thursday, August 18, 2011. He was a noted and much loved local historian, minister in the African Methodist Episcopal Church and administrative assistant at Gay Lacy Farms in Newport. Born Sept. 14, 1940 at Oil Trough in Independence County, he was the son of James Logan Morgan Sr. and Eva Irene Landrum Morgan. He graduated from Newport High School in 1958 and earned a Bachelor of Arts Degrees in history and business from Arkansas College. He is survived by brothers, Joe and Sam Morgan; and his sisters, Minnie Dutton, Paulette LeMay and Mary Jane Coats. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m., Thursday at Tolerson Funeral Home, 1110 Remmel Ave. in Newport. The funeral service will be 1 p.m., Friday at the United Methodist Church, Laurel and 3rd St. in Newport.
