James Edward Daugherty, 92, of Conway passed away on Saturday, June 18, 2011. He was born on Sunday, May 25, 1919 in Conway, Ark. to the late James E. and Elizabeth (Leinhart) Daugherty. Jim grew up in Conway and enjoyed telling tales of growing up with his family in rural Conway. He was an excellent cabinet maker and was employed in construction by Nabholz and Starkey Construction before his retirement. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army. Jim was a lifetime member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. Mr. Daugherty was also a long-term (50-plus years) member of the Knights of Columbus. He and his wife were AARP members and volunteered regularly at the American Red Cross blood drive. Jim will be remembered for his extra-ordinary garden. He generously shared its bountiful produce with anyone. His dry sense of humor, and devotion to his wife, Rose, who died in 2005 after fifty-seven years of marriage, were keystones of his life. He is survived by three daughters, Patricia (Daugherty) and Carroll Keatts of Little Rock, Sarah (Daugherty) and Ralph Thronton of Conway, and Rebecca (Daugherty) and Randy Kersten of Little Rock; four grandchildren, Kathryn (Keatts) and Matt Feehan of Honolulu, Hawaii, April (Kersten) and Arturo Torres, Jacob Kersten, and Michael Kersten of Little Rock; sister, Loretta Weisbrod of Independence, Mo., and a multitude of nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents and loving wife, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Clarence Daugherty, John Daugherty, and Raymond Daugherty; and two sisters, Mary Moix and Bertha Dayer. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m., on Wednesday, June 22, 2011 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Conway with Father James Melnick officiating. Entombment will follow at St. Joseph Mausoleum with Leonard Dayer, John Dayer, Larry Dayer, James Daugherty, Michael Kersten, and Jacob Kersten, serving as pallbearers. Rosary will be held at 6 p.m., on Tuesday, June 21, 2011 at Roller-McNutt Funeral Home, Conway followed by visitation from 7 to 9 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to: St. Joseph Endowment Fund, 1115 College Ave, Conway, 72034 or Friends of Nursing/UCA Department of Nursing, 201 Donaghey Ave, Conway, 72035.
