Clara M. Acord

Clara M Acord, 82, long time resident of Dermott, died Friday March 25, 2011 in her home. Born on Dec. 17, 1928 to Edna (Young) Shumate and Chester Shumate in Chismville, Ark. Her family moved to Dermott in 1941 where she resided until her death. She retired from Wells Lamont Corporation in 1982 and was a well loved and valued member of her church and community. Mrs. Acord was a member of Dermott Baptist Church where she served in a number of capacities over the years most recently as president and treasurer of the Women's Missionary Union, Dorcas Sunday School teacher and choir member. She was a member of the Dermott City Nursing Home Auxiliary and was dedicated to outreach projects that enhanced the lives of its residents. She is preceded in death by her husband of 47 years Uldene "Smiley" Acord; son, Gary Don Acord; brothers John D. Shumate and Travis J. Penix and sisters, Faye Simpson and Minnie Rhoades. Mrs. Acord is survived by two sons, Bob Stover (Jane MacCallum) of Cocoa, Fla. and John Paul "Eddy" Stover of Slidell, La.; daughter, Brenda Britton (Edward) of Little Rock, Ark.; her grandchildren, G. Robert Britton, Paul E. Britton, Shawna C. Willingham and Elizabeth A. Elrod; her great-grandchildren, Paul Douglas Britton, Pierce Britton, Gabrielle Willingham, Braden E. Willingham, John Elrod and Reagan Elrod. Pallbearers will include Herb Green, Gerald Mercer, Buddy Owens, Jimmy Parkerson, Morris Smith and Norris Stevens. Honorary pallbearers are Tommy Spurlock and John Russell "Rusty" Lee. Visitation will be in McGehee, Ark. at Griffin Funeral Service on Sunday, March 27 from 5 to 7 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, March 27 at the Dermott Baptist Church with Rev. Brad Elrod, Pastor Steven Tiner and Pastor Jerry Starnes officiating. Interment will be at Dermott Cemetery. In Lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Dermott Baptist Church, 401 S.
