She attended Washburn College in Topeka, Kansas, received a Master's degree from Syracuse University, a Specialist degree from Pittsburg State University in Kansas, and a doctorate from the University of Kansas. She taught school in Mound Valley, Parsons, and Pittsburg, Kansas, and then joined the faculty of Eastern Illinois University in Charleston, Illinois, from which she retired in l980. She and Robert Shuff retired to Arkadelphia, Arkansas, where both have been involved in University and community affairs. She was a lifelong member of the Presbyterian Church, President of the League of Women Voters in three cities, a fifty-year member of P.E.O., and in Arkadelphia was a member of the Music Club, Colerean, Democratic Women, and a book club. She served as a member of the Clark County Library Board and remained active in several art groups including the Caddo River Art Guild. She studied art both at Eastern Illinois University and for 18 years at Henderson State University and had some success in the surrounding area with her specialties: etchings, screen prints, wood and linoleum cuts among others. She and Robert Shuff moved to Hot Springs, Arkansas in 2010. Devoted to her extended family, and certainly a "people person," Marian had many interests, among them sewing, her computer, reading, and traveling. Should memorials be made, please consider the Shuff Scholarship Funds at Henderson State University and the Caddo River Art Guild. Guests may register at www.caruth-hale.com.
