Melissa Campbell Carroll

Melissa Campbell Carroll, of Fayetteville, Arkansas, passed away peacefully on September 6, 2011, after fighting a six year battle with metastatic breast cancer. Melissa was born to Martha and the late Davies Campbell in Little Rock, Arkansas, on March 29, 1957. She graduated from Mount Saint Mary Academy in Little Rock and later earned a degree in Business Management from the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville where she was also a member of Zeta Tau Alpha sorority. As an active member of the Junior League of Little Rock, Melissa learned the importance of community involvement and was involved on many community boards and committees such as Riverfest, Bargain Barn, Arkansas Children's Hospital, and the Florence Crittenden Home. Melissa moved to Fayetteville in 1989. She served as the Assistant to the President of the Fayetteville Chamber of Commerce for many years and graduated from the Institute for Organizational Management at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas, sponsored by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. After retirement, Melissa was appointed by the Arkansas Supreme Court to serve on the board of the Arkansas Lawyer's Assistant Program. She was one of the first volunteers for the Komen Ozark Race for the Cure and served on the steering committee for the past four years. During this time, she was recognized with the New Balance Survivor Award in 2009, the Jackie New Award in 2011, and was the Top Fundraiser in 2008, 2009, and 2010. Melissa also spent countless hours as a volunteer at Highlands Oncology Clinic. She was a Master Gardener and member of the Maple Hills Garden Club and the Fayetteville Country Club Ladies Golf Association. Melissa is survived by Steve Carroll, her husband of 30 years. She is also survived by her son Clark Carroll and his wife Mary of Jacksonville, Arkansas, her son, Clay Carroll and his wife Shannon of Shreveport, Louisiana, her mother Martha Campbell of Little Rock, Arkansas, and her sister Anne Fink and her husband Dan of Zionsville, Indiana. She is also survived by her nieces, Caroline, Aubrey, Christian, and Emily Fink. The family would like to offer a special thanks to Dr. Thad Beck and his nurse Shannon Rumsey and the other wonderful staff members at Highlands Oncology Group and to Dr. Laura Hutchins of UAMS in Little Rock. They would also like to extend a heartfelt thanks to the many friends of Melissa who were so special and meant so much in her life. A memorial service honoring the life of Melissa will be held 2 p.m., Friday, September 9 at Central United Methodist Church in Fayetteville, Arkansas with Rev. Steven K. Pulliam and Rev.
