Mae Jean Igou Roberts, 85, was born on July 16th, 1926 to the late Lloyd and Mae Igou of Memphis, Tennessee and died June 3rd, 2012. She attended Mrs. Hutchison's School for Girls and Southwestern College until Charlie Roberts came to town and swept her away, telling her the first night they met that he was going to marry her. Raised as an only child not allowed to have pets, she and Charles proceeded to fill their house with four children and a myriad of animals from dogs and cats, rabbits to Mexican burros on the back property. She drove endless carpools in a series of station wagons, volunteered at schools and Trinity Episcopal Cathedral and served as president of the Arkansas Dental Auxiliary. Her life was full of family, friends and time with Charles. She loved classical music, reading, travel, friendly games of bridge, and a good joke. As one of the first Master Gardeners, she, with Charles, spent many hours tending to roses, vegetable gardens and propagating in the green house. Jean was preceded in death by her son, James Lloyd Roberts, age 21, her husband, Dr. Charles T. Roberts, son-in law ,Dr John W. Hatley, and grandson James Robert Garison, age 25. Her quiet strength was derived from her deep faith in God. She is survived by her children, Ann Hatley, Dr Tom Roberts (wife Jackie), Holley Garison (husband Bob), and grandchildren, Dr John Hatley (Dr Nayla), Charlie Roberts (Mary Claire), Anna Leigh Phillips (Dr Billy), Beth Wylie (Aaron), Katie and Matthew Roberts. She was also fortunate to have eight great-grandchildren. We thank her care givers Marsha, Janelle, Iretha, Sherry, Geraldine, Tanya and longtime helper Sue Fierro for kind ministrations to our mother. In addition, we are grateful to the staff at Hospice Home Care for tending to mother her last month. There will be a funeral service, Thursday, June 7, 2012 at 10 a.m. at St. Mark's Episcopal Church, 1000 North Mississippi, Little Rock, with Rev. Danny Schieffler officiating. Burial will follow at Pinecrest Memorial Park. In Lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Pulaski County Humane Society or St. Mark's Episcopal Church. Funeral arrangements under the direction of Ruebel Funeral Home, www.ruebelfuneralhome.com.
