Evelyn White Smith

Mrs. Evelyn White Smith, 94, of Hamburg, died Saturday, May 5, 2012 at the Newton County Nursing Home in Jasper, Arkansas. Mrs. Smith was a native of Rawls Junction, Arkansas and a resident of Hamburg for most of her life. She graduated in 1968 from the Texas Women's University with a Master's Degree in Library Science. She taught school in Moro, Lake Village and Hamburg having retired in 1982 as a High School Librarian. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Hamburg. She is preceded in death by her husband, John Douglas Smith in 1954; a daughter, Mary Karen Smith in 1976; her parents, Dr. Emery Owen & Minnie Rawls White and two sisters, Helen White and Hazel White Fitzgerald. She is survived by a daughter, Camille Carpenter and husband, Jack Jr. of Compton; a son, Johnny Smith and wife, Belle, of Moselle, Mississippi; three grandsons, Jackson Carpenter III and wife, Teresa, John F. Smith and wife, Tara, and William Smith; three great-grandsons, Jack Henry Carpenter, Wyatt & Maddox Smith. Funeral services are 10 a.m., Tuesday at the First Baptist Church with Rev. Jimmy D. Wallace and Dr. Bobby Pennington officiating. Burial will be in the Hamburg Cemetery. Pallbearers are Jackson Carpenter, John Smith, William Smith, Butch Lochala, Drew Carpenter and Todd Callaway.
