Mary Blakely Winburn

Mary Blakely Winburn, mother, grandmother, friend, physician, master gardener, musician and gentle person passed away peacefully at her home in Ft. Myers, Florida on February 17, 2013. Throughout her life she was a gifted woman of uncommon intellect and warm personality. Although it is a time of sadness, it is also a time to thank God for her life. Mary was born in Little Rock, Arkansas on July 25, 1930 to Hardy Lathan Winburn III and Gladys Hope Durrett Winburn. She graduated from the University of Arkansas in 1950 with a Bachelor of Science degree. She earned a Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Arkansas Medical School in 1954. She earned Diplomate, American Board of Anatomic Pathology in 1967 and was resident at the University of Arkansas Medical Center, Little Rock, and Arkansas Baptist Medical Center. She served as Instructor and Assistant Professor of Pathology until 1969. She earned Diplomate, American Board of Clinical Pathology in 1972 and was resident at the George Washington University Medical Center, Washington, D.C. She was Chairman of the Department of Pathology of Loudon Memorial Hospital, Leesburg, Virginia from 1971-1979 also serving as Chief of Staff. She later earned board certification in neurology from the University of Arkansas Medical Center in 1991. She retired and moved to Ft. Myers in 1999. Mary had diverse gifts. She enjoyed the splendor of the flowers she grew. She loved classical literature and music. She enjoyed reading of quantum physics and astronomy. She was an avid duplicate bridge player, soup kitchen volunteer and faithful member of the Bell Choir of The Ft. Myers Congregational United Church of Christ. She will be greatly missed by family and many dear friends. Mary was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Hardy Lathan Winburn IV of Little Rock, and dear friend and companion William Wepfer of Ft. Myers. She is survived by her daughters, Sara Elisabeth Dulaney (Gerry Madison) Phillips of Mobile, Alabama, Laura Anne (Scott Victor) Oxman of Ft. Myers, Florida, Hillary A. Hyde of Portland, Oregon, and son Marshall Bartlett (Caitlin) Hyde of Corning, New York. She is also survived by her grandchildren Greg Matthew (Leslie James) Phillips, Clare Elisabeth Phillips (Mitchell Trotter) McConnell, Anna Katherine Phillips, all of Mobile, Jason Haynes Williams of Houston, Craig Williams of Tuscaloosa, Alabama, and Kristin Anne Williams of Ft. Myers, Theo Adam Salzburg of Portland, her great grandchildren Andy, Katie, Sarah Kate, Ella, and Mia. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Carolyn Becker Winburn of Little Rock, nephews, Hardy Lathan Winburn V of Little Rock, Russell Becker (Laura Cooper) Winburn of Fayettevile, Arkansas, Jack Carnes Winburn of McKinney, Texas, and niece, Mary Carolyn Winburn (Robert Gould III) Wilson of Arlington, Virginia. A service of the Celebration of Life will be held at the Ft. Myers Congregational United Church of Christ on Tuesday March 5, 2013 at 3 p.m. Burial services will be held March 8, 2013 at Roselawn Memorial Gardens, Little Rock, Arkansas on Friday March 8, 2013 at 1 p.m. with visitation near the graveside beginning at 12:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Ft. Myers Congregational Church of Christ, 8210 College Parkway, Ft. Myers, Florida 33919 for the Bell Choir ministry or to the Harry Chapin Food Bank.
