Richard Gordon "Dick" Coffman

Richard Gordon "Dick" Coffman, 83, of Little Rock died Sunday February 23rd, 2014. He was born in St. Louis, Missouri on August 13th, 1930 to the late Samuel Richard and Lois McCracken Coffman. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Phillip Hal Coffman. Dick graduated from Jackson High School in Jackson, Tennessee in 1948 a student athlete playing basketball, baseball, and running track. He attended Athens College in Athens, Alabama from 1948-1950 and Florence State Teachers College in Florence, Alabama playing both basketball and baseball. Dick signed a professional contract to play baseball with the Brooklyn Dodgers Baseball Club in 1952 and was sent to Union City, Texas to play minor league ball where he played a total of 30 games, pitching in nine. He joined the Air Force in 1952 serving during the Korean Conflict and was honorably discharged in 1960. Dick had a passion for golf. He played golf anytime, anywhere, and with anyone he could. He won the Little Rock City Golf Title in 1961 and in 1966 and competed in countless golf tournaments in the state of Arkansas throughout his life. Everyone knew he had a love for fast cars, he like driving his multiple muscle cars and was always on the lookout for the next one. In the 1970's he developed a talent and competiveness for the game of table tennis. He traveled all over the country competing and winning table tennis tournaments and numerous titles throughout his table tennis playing days. He worked in sales throughout his life and enjoyed meeting and talking to everyone. Dick never was shy to share a good story or shoot the breeze. For many years he worked for Bale Chevrolet, delivering vehicles and doing various other duties. He loved working for the Bale Family and with everyone at the dealership. Dick is survived by his two daughters: Keli Stroman and husband Alan, and Mala Munford and husband John all of Little Rock, his two grandchildren: Justin Stroman and wife Erin of Little Rock and Andrew Stroman of Fayetteville; his brother, Cy Mac Coffman of Fairhope, Alabama, and close family friend, Barbara Coffman of Little Rock. He was a wonderful Father, Grandfather, and friend. It can never be truly expressed how important his two daughters were, as they meant the world to him in his life. He was never to busy to drop everything and help out whoever needed him, wanted to talk, go out to eat, drive them somewhere, or just to listen. He will leave a great void that will be difficult to fill. We want to thank all his multiple friends who came to see and visit with him throughout these last weeks. It meant the world to him and to all of us. He made a lot of good friends and they are truly appreciated for their friendships and support. A memorial service will be held Thursday, 2 p.m., February 27th at Second Presbyterian Church, (600 Pleasant Valley Dr., Little Rock, 72212) officiated by Rev. Steve Hancock.
