David Thomas Smith, known by most as Dave, age 78, of Magnolia, Arkansas, was born on May 8, 1935 and died on January 25, 2014 after a brief illness. Dave retired from Southern Arkansas University where he was the Assistant Director of the Physical Plant. He also worked for many years at First National Bank of Magnolia, Koppers Inc., and Unit Structures. David enjoyed his career immensely, especially the time he worked with his cousin, Buck Simpson, at Hush Puppy Enterprises in Texarkana. Dave was a 1953 graduate of Magnolia High School, and graduated with his BS degree in Business Administration and English from Southern State College (now Southern Arkansas University) in 1957. He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas Hicks Smith and Lila (Simpson) Smith, and daughter, Jamie Baker. He is survived by his wife of 53-years, Carole Sue Jameson Smith, son, Todd Smith and wife, Joanna, and granddaughters Olivia and Leighton Smith, all of Magnolia, Arkansas, son-in-law Carey Baker, and grandchildren Johanna, Grant, and Jay Todd Baker, all of Arkadelphia, Arkansas. He is also survived by a host of other relatives and many friends. Visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m. on Tuesday, January 28 at Lewis Funeral Home. A burial will be held at Magnolia Memorial Park at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, January 29, with memorial services following at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church, Magnolia, with David Watkins and Roger Dunlap officiating and Lewis Funeral Home in charge. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Columbia County Community Foundation, P.O. Box 9411, Magnolia, Ark. 71754, for a local service project to be determined by the family.
