John Greer Thompson Sr.

John Greer Thompson Sr., age 91 of McCrory, Ark., died Monday, November 17, 2014, at the White County Hospital. Mr. Thompson was born September 5, 1923, to Vance Maynard Thompson Sr., and Elizabeth Greer Thompson of McCrory, Ark. Visitation was Wednesday, November 19, 2014 from 5-7 p.m. at Thompson-Wilson Funeral Home in McCrory with funeral services on Thursday, November 20, 2014 at the funeral home as well. Interment will be in Fakes Cemetery with Thompson-Wilson Directors in charge of arrangements. He attended McCrory public schools and graduated from Columbia Military Academy, Columbia, Tenn. Mr. Thompson attended college at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tenn., and completed his education at the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville. He served three years in the United States Army and was wounded during World War II receiving a purple heart during his service in the Philippines. Following in his father's footsteps, Mr. Thompson began a lifelong career as a banker and business man. He served on the Board of Directors and as president of M.D. Thompson & Son from 1961 until his death. He was elected to the Board of Directors of the Bank of McCrory in 1961, elected Vice-President in 1970, and served as Chairman of the Board of Directors from 1989 until 2001 and interim President at various times throughout his career. Mr. Thompson was a member of the American Legion, Civil Air Patrol of Arkansas, and the McCrory United Methodist Church. Mr. Thompson was known to be a man of few words but enjoyed conversing with others about his two children. He had a love for aviation; where in his early years, he and his wife spent their free time flying airplanes and soaring gliders. He also enjoyed driving the country roads surveying the farm land. Mr. Thompson was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Vance Maynard Thompson Jr., Henry Ripley Thompson, and William Hadley Thompson; and one sister, Elizabeth Thompson Russell. He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Brenda Thompson of McCrory, Ark.; one son, John Greer Thompson, Jr., of Denver, Colo.; one daughter, Brooke Thompson of Little Rock, Ark.; one sister, Ruth Thompson Trammell of Nashville, Tenn.; many nieces and nephews; and his right hand man, Jimmy Little. Visitation was held from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, November 19, 2014, at the Thompson-Wilson McCrory Funeral Home. The funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, November 20, 2014, at the Thomas-Wilson McCrory Funeral Home with the interment following at the Fakes Cemetary. Pallbearers will be Vance Thompson, Jan Thompson, Caleb Thompson, Jimmy Little, Randy Wallace, and Tim St. Clair. Honorary pallbearers will be Paul Longrader, James Currier, Bob King, Pat Conway, Gary McCue, John Wiggins, Ronnie Pittman, Johnny Hudson, and Wayne Boyce. The family asks that donations be made to the Woodruff County Animal Rescue Friends or to the donor's favorite charity.
