Carol Lewis Fox

Carol Lewis Fox, a cherished friend to all who knew her died unexpectedly May 12, 2016. Born May 14, 1944, in Little Rock, Ark., the daughter of Marguerite McVey and Eugene Leslie Lewis, Carol spent her childhood in Little Rock, where she was a graduate of Hall High School, before attending Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas. Preceded in death by her beloved husband, William "Bill" Fox Jr., Carol is survived by her brother, Gene Lewis (Ann) of Little Rock, Ark.; her brother-in-law, James N. Fox (J'Laine) of Hot Springs Village, Ark.;; many cherished nieces, nephews, cousins, godchildren; and her dog, Katie, whom she adored. Full of grace, kindness, and generosity, Carol coveted her family and friends above all else. She possessed a faithful and loving spirit. She was happiest in the company of family and friends while quietly investing in the welfare of others. Perhaps this was most evident through her love, support, and devotion to Bill, her husband of 47 years. Carol met Bill in Dallas, Texas as students at Southern Methodist University, where Carol received her Bachelor of Arts degree. They were married after her graduation in 1966. Carol & Bill moved to Georgia in 1971, the beginning of their deep and long-standing relationships with Emory and Atlanta. Both Carol and Bill were devoted educators, and Carol thrived in teaching and mentoring young people. Carol was a dedicated second grade teacher at Christ the King School for many years and more recently, a tutor at the International Community School in Decatur. From the start of Bill's career at Emory in 1974 until his retirement in 2005, Carol was an indispensable ally in his work, and Bill often referred to her as the "unsung hero" of his accomplishments at Emory. Her gracious manner, warmth, and charm won many friends for the University. Carol was an energetic traveler, not only accompanying Bill on many trips on behalf of Emory, but also enjoying their frequent international vacations. The Fox Center for Humanistic Inquiry at Emory University is named in honor of Carol and Bill Fox, in tribute to their long and devoted service. Carol will be most remembered for her enthusiasm for life, her gentle disposition, and her sincere interest in others. Those were her greatest traits, and she received so much joy from celebrating those close to her. She was an active member of All Saints' Episcopal Church in Atlanta, the Cherokee Garden Club, and the Piedmont Driving Club. Carol was a beautiful person who earned the affection of all who knew her well and were blessed to call her a friend. A memorial service was held at All Saints' Episcopal Church in Atlanta at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, May 19, 2016, with a reception following at the Church. Gifts in memory of Carol Lewis Fox may be sent to the office of Gift Records, Emory University, 1762 Clifton Road NE, Suite 1400, Atlanta, Ga. 30222 in support of The Bill and Carol Fox Center for Humanistic Inquiry, or to All Saints' Episcopal Church, 634 W. Peachtree St. NW, Atlanta, Georgia, 30308.
