John Green, age 96, of Conway, passed away on October 1, 2017, at Conway Regional due to complications from a fall. John was born on June 21, 1921, to Wade Preston Green and Marguerite Honeycutt Green in Little Rock, Arkansas. He was preceded in death by his wife, Viva Lucille Pounders Green, his brother, Sterling Green of Camden, and his sister, Marguerite Metsker of Hendersonville, Tennessee. He is survived by Mary Lynda Barham (Charles) of Conway, Kathleen Rogers (Dan) of Forney, Texas, Jennifer Leigh Johnson (Arthur) of Little Rock, and John Stacy Green (Monica) of Enola. He is also survived by the following grandchildren: Ed Linck (Mariana) of Conway, Ike Preston Linck of Conway, Luke Daniel Rogers (Jennifer) of Tucson, Ariz., Grant Jonathan Rogers (Taryn) of Wichita Falls, Texas, Stacy Lucille Greenlaw of Hot Springs, John Stacy Green Jr. of Maumelle, Matthew Curtis of Little Rock, Racheal Johnson of Jacksonville, Rose Johnson of Sherwood, and Kristen Hernandez (Heriberto) of Jacksonville. John was very proud of his 18 great-grandchildren. He will also be missed by a host of nieces, nephews and friends. John served in the Army during World War II, spending 21 months in Europe. He was in England, France, Holland and Germany. When the war ended, he returned to Little Rock and took a civil service job where he met Lucy. After a brief courtship, they married, resigned their jobs and moved to Monticello for John to start college using the GI Bill. He transferred the next year to the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville and graduated with a BS in Agriculture in 1950. John and Lucy spent the next 20 years in England, Arkansas, where he taught Veterans, High School Agri, and chemistry for three years. He then was promoted to be the Principal of England High School and he began working on his Masters Degree in Education Administration from U of A. He completed this degree in 1960. In 1970, John was promoted to Superintendent of the England School District. After two years, he accepted a job as supervisor of the Veterans Approving Agency in the State Dept of Education in Little Rock. He worked there until he retired in 1983. John and Lucy moved from England to Conway in 1976. John loved having enough land for a big garden. He grew the best tomatoes and blackberries, which he loved to share with friends at Graham Chapel United Methodist Church down the road. Lucy passed away in 2012 and John spent these last five years helping and guiding family and friends. John spent many hours in daily prayer, Bible study, visiting and watching old movies. Services will be held at Roller-McNutt Funeral Home on October 6, 2017, at 3 p.m. with interment at Crestlawn Memorial Park at 4:30 p.m. This will be followed by a reception at Graham Chapel United Methodist Church just across Highway 64. Visitation will be from 6pm to 8pm Thursday at the funeral home.
