Carl Gene Mitchell

Dr. Carl G. Mitchell died peacefully on December 19, 2018 in Mesquite, Texas, at the age of 92. He is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Frances Rotramel Mitchell; by his daughter Michelle Glover; by his two sons, Mickey Mitchell and Cary Mitchell; and by eight grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. Dr. Mitchell was born to Hubert R. Mitchell and Isophine McAlister Mitchell on July 29, 1926 in Santa Paula, California. He was a graduate of Pepperdine University (B.A. and M.A.) and the University of Southern California (Ph.D.) A World War II-era veteran, he served in the U.S. Army from 1944-1946. Dr. Mitchell worked in higher education for over 40 years. At Harding University he was Dean of the College of Bible and Religion; he also taught courses in religion, counseling, and psychology. Earlier, he was a tenured professor and administrator at Pepperdine University. Throughout his life, Dr. Mitchell was active in ministry with the churches of Christ, serving churches in Italy, California, and Arkansas. A licensed marriage and family therapist, he counseled many hundreds of couples and individuals during his career. Dr. Mitchell was compassionate, generous, and had an engaging sense of humor. He loved his family, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He wrote poems to celebrate the birth of each child and grandchild. He loved golf and played innumerable rounds with his friends in Searcy. Dr. Mitchell's greatest passion was for serving God and telling others about Christ. A strong man and indefatigable worker, he wrote prolifically, taught or preached whenever possible, and sought to encourage others in their walk with the Lord. A memorial service celebrating the life of Carl G. Mitchell will be held at College Church of Christ in Searcy, Arkansas, in January 2019, on a day to be announced.
