Robert Patton, age 88, died December 21, 2019 at Circle of Life hospice after a long struggle with Parkinson's. Robert was born October 31, 1931, in Fallsville, Ark., and spent his boyhood in the woods of Northwest Arkansas. His natural curiosity fueled a desire to explore and learn, which lasted his entire life. As a youth, his activities included taxidermy, a traveling magic act, reading books that stirred his imagination—and work. The work ethic developed as boy remained with him his entire life. After graduating from Oark High School, he married Rita I. Curran, and struck out for California. They lived on the "East Bay" side of San Francisco and established a good life for themselves, which included the birth of a daughter and son. But after a few years, they felt the pull of home and returned to Arkansas, settling in Springdale. Robert created a screen printing business in Springdale, but his principal occupation was fence construction. After owning Red Barn Tool Rental, he ended his work life as a postal rural carrier. Following retirement, he continued interests developed earlier, which included extensive RV travel and auctions. He was fascinated by many things mechanical, such as antique engines—a hobby pursued as a member of Tired Iron of the Ozarks. In his words, "I like to make stuff." He made plenty of stuff, and also repaired stuff. And what was made and repaired was always well-made and well-repaired. He was an avid reader and Louis L'Amour was his favorite author. Grapes of Wrath was his favorite movie. Having coffee and jokes with friends was his favorite activity. Robert was predeceased by the love of his life, his wife Rita, in 2015. He is survived by his daughter Patricia Patton of Reno, Nev., and his son Michael R. Patton of Bethel Heights. Graveside services will be held at Bluff Cemetery on Thursday, December 26, at 11 a.m. Arrangements with Heritage Funeral Home. Online guestbook and obituary at www.heritageofnwa.com.
