John H. (Sonny) Burgess, III

John H. (Sonny) Burgess, III, 76, of Lonoke passed away peacefully Feb. 8, 2019, in Richardson, Texas, surrounded by his family. Sonny was born to J. H. (Jake) Burgess, Jr., and Anna Lou Burgess on Aug. 4, 1942. He graduated from Lonoke High School in 1960 and attended Arkansas Polytechnical College where he studied agriculture. He returned permanently to Lonoke and spent his entire life here, working first as a farmer and then retiring from his trucking company in order to spend more time with his family. Sonny was preceded in death by his wife of 22 years, Virgie Burgess; his parents, Jake and Anna Lou Burgess; sister, Rita June Burgess; and his only son, John H. (Bert) Burgess, IV. Sonny is survived by his only daughter, Ginger Schmidt; son-in-law, John Schmidt; grandchildren, Jalana, Jessica and Jake Schmidt; great-granddaughter, Kenzie Ava Martinez; and a host of extended family and friends he loved like family. Visitation will be Monday, Feb. 11, 2019, from 6-8 p.m. at Boyd Funeral Home in Lonoke. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Feb. 12, at 1 p.m. at Caney Creek Baptist Church, where Sonny was a lifelong member. Pastor Bob Courson will officiate. Interment will follow at Hicks Cemetery.
