Harold "Monty" Thurman

Harold "Monty" Thurman formerly of Carroll County was born April 10, 1941, in Fort Smith, Ark., to Leo and Elizabeth Thurman. Harold passed away on November 20, 2019, in Fayetteville at the age of 78. Harold graduated from Naval boot camp between his junior and senior year of High School. He graduated from Eureka Springs High School in 1959. He served on the USS Pandemas as radio operator from 1961-1963. Upon discharge from the Navy he married Susanne Hunsley and they resided in Memphis, Tenn., where he worked at the White Stone Company. Eventually he started the Ozark Stone Company. All three of his children were born in Memphis, and in August 1973 they returned to Eureka Springs. He and Susanne opened the Tasty Freeze, the first of many Carroll County businesses. He was the owner of four motels, two restaurants, apartments and a partner with his brothers in the real estate and insurance business. In 1976, he moved his family to Berryville where he and Susanne raised them. Harold served on the Berryville City Council from 1985-1990, he was a longtime member of First Baptist Church of Berryville and a charter member of the Eureka Springs Kiwanis. Harold's greatest love was his family. He was married to Susanne for 53 years. He took pride in his three children, Julia, Kristine and Greg and he loved his seven grandchildren. August 6, 1966, Harold was united in marriage to Susanne (Hunsley) Thurman who survives him. He is also survived by two daughters, Julia Williams and husband Dwight of Fayetteville, Kristine Crownover and husband Brian of Cave Springs; one son, Greg Thurman and wife Ashley of Berryville; grandchildren, Elizabeth Williams, Allison Williams, Megan Crownover, James Daniel Crownover, Abby Thurman, Mia Thurman, and Paige Thurman; sister, Harriett Turner and husband Roy of Little Rock; brother, Bobby Dale Thurman and wife Carla of Eureka Springs; sister-in-law, Sheila Thurman of Rogers; brother-in-law, Tom Stockslage of Plano, Texas; numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews. Harold is preceded in death by his parents, Leo and Elizabeth Thurman, and one brother, Don Thurman. Visitation will be Saturday, November 23, 2019, 10 am. till 11 a.m., at First Assembly of God in Eureka Springs, Ark. Funeral service will follow at 11 a.m., with Pastor Billy McCall officiating.
