George Lewis Cummings

October 14th, 2020, at 12:15 a.m., the celebration began. George Lewis Cummings, 96 years young, took his seat at the Cummings family reunion. He joined his mother and father, Lavinia Evelyn and Ulysis Sidney; his brother, Page Poindexter; his sisters, Mina Jane, Lena Marie, Leah Rachel, Clara Elizabeth, Daphna Pauline; his brothers, William Ross and Samuel Dwight; and his sister, Ruth Flora Mae. Special guests in attendance were God and Jesus. George Lewis Cummings, born on December 24th, 1923, was the baby of the family. The reunion took place under the oak tree, on the mountain top, outside of Leslie, Ark. The original homeplace, built in the mid-1800's, still stands. Homemade wine, from the vineyards on the farm and made by Ulysis was served. Food for the soul was supplied by God and Jesus. It was the first time, in many, many years that the entire family has been together and never to be apart again. George Lewis Cummings is helping to prepare a place at the reunion for his wife of 66 years, Rosa Lee; his daughter, Brenda Lee; and sons, Bruce Alan (Roberta), Grant W (Charlene), and Glenn Randall (Sonni). George Lewis and wife Rosa Lee have nine grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren. George Lewis Cummings was a Methodist. His family moved their membership to Sylvan Hills United Methodist Church on April 5th, 1959. He taught Sunday school for fifteen years. He was recognized by the Sylvan Hills United Methodist Church as man of the year in 1994 and given a lifetime achievement award in 2016. George Lewis Cummings proudly served his country during Worlds War II from 1943 until 1946 in the United States Navy. He spent most of his tour of duty in the Asiatic Pacific liberation. He was trained as a diesel mechanic for Patrol Boats (PT Boats), though he never worked on one during his tour. He was assigned to the USS Culebra, a floating repair ship. George Lewis Cummings was a machinist for Westinghouse/North American Phillips for 37 years, when he retired in 1986. He and his brother, Dwight, owned many businesses together, the last of which was Sylvan Hills Home and Auto. The two brothers along with wives, children and friends ran that business from 1959 until 1980. Visitation will be at Smith North Little Rock Funeral Home, from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m., on Friday, October 16th. Funeral services will be at Sylvan Hills United Methodist Church, at 11 a.m. on Saturday, October 17th. Pall Bearers will be Bruce Cummings, Grant Cummings, Glenn Cummings, Sam Cummings, Michael Cummings, and Wayne Cummings. Interment will be at the Arkansas State Veterans Cemetery at 11 a.m., on Monday, October 19th. Memorials may be made to the Sylvan Hills United Methodist Church or to the charity of your choosing.
