Dorcas Sue Pine

Dorcas Sue Patterson Pine died peacefully at home on September 18, 2021. She was born May 24, 1935 in Russellville, Ark. She was the daughter of the late Judge George O. Patterson and Dorcas Ferguson Patterson, and was a descendant of pioneer Arkansas families. Sue was a graduate of Clarksville High School, where she was Salutatorian of her class and state President of the Arkansas Beta Club. She was Queen Elberta XII of the Johnson County Peach Festival. She attended the College of the Ozarks (now University of the Ozarks) and graduated from the University of Arkansas. While on the Fayetteville campus, she was a member of Pi Beta Phi, Mortar Board, and Phi Beta Kappa. She received a master's degree in public administration from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock (UALR). In 1957 she went to Midland, Texas, to become Women and Girls Director of the Midland YMCA. While there, she met her future husband, and on August 15, 1959, she and Robert H. Pine, Jr. were married. In 1961, they moved to Little Rock and she became Director of Public Relations at Little Rock University. This marked the beginning of an association with Little Rock University and its successor, UALR, that would last 40 years. Other positions she held at UALR included Director of Information and Alumni Affairs, Director of Admissions, and Associate Director of Admissions and Records. Sue was a member of Chapter AK, P.E.O., and had served as President of her chapter and President of the Little Rock Reciprocity Council of P.E.O. In 1977, she served as state President of Arkansas P.E.O. She later served on the international level of P.E.O. as a member of the Board of Trustees of the P.E.O. International Peace Scholarship Fund for six years, the last two serving as Chairman. Further service came as a member of the P.E.O. International Nominating Committee for four years, the last two of which she served as Chairman. Sue had been President of the Little Rock Alumnae Club of Pi Beta Phi, and served as Chairman of the Alumnae Advisory Committee of Arkansas Beta Chapter, Pi Beta Phi at UALR. She was the President of the Little Rock Altrusa Club as well as a District Director of Altrusa International, District Eight. She had served as Secretary of the Altrusa International, Inc. of Little Rock Foundation. Sue most recently was a Chapter member of Altrusa International of Hot Springs Village, serving as Secretary. When her son was active in school activities, she held offices in the Parent Teachers Association, Band Parents Club, and Swim Team Parents Club. She never missed a chance to be involved as a mother and was her son's biggest cheerleader and best pep-talker. Sue had served on the Bess Stephens YMCA Board of Directors, the Pulaski County Democratic Committee, and was a member of the Board of Directors of the University of Arkansas Alumni Association. More recently, Sue served on the University of the Ozarks Alumni Board of Directors. She served as state President of the professional organization Arkansas Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers, and was active on the regional level, serving on the Southern Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers Executive Board as Vice President for Admissions Services, and also as a Member-at-Large, having previously served as Chairman of the region's Nominations and Elections Committee. Sue was a member of Second Presbyterian Church in Little Rock, having previously been a member of First Presbyterian Church in Clarksville, Conway, and in Midland, Texas. Sue is predeceased by her parents, a sister, Alice Ann Patterson Harris, and a great niece, Katherine Wolfe. Sue is survived by her husband of 62 years, Robert H. Pine, Jr., of Hot Springs; her son, Robert Patterson Pine of Little Rock; her brother-in-law, Eugene F. Harris of Mount Pleasant, S.C.; two nephews, Ronald George Harris and wife Carolyn of Nashville, Tenn., and Eugene Patterson Harris and wife Carol of Los Angeles, Calif,; a niece, Cheryl Harris Ledbetter and husband Dennis of Mt. Pleasant, S.C.; three great-nieces- and one great-nephew. Memorials may be made to the University of the Ozarks at 415 N. College Avenue in Clarksville, Ark. 72830 or to P.E.O. International Peace Scholarship at 3700 Grand Avenue in Des Moines, Iowa 50312. A graveside service is at 11 a.m. on Friday, September 24, 2021, at Oakland Cemetery in Clarksville, Ark., with Reverend Krista Denne officiating.
